Get a New Front-Desk Hire Shift-Ready by Day 4
Two weeks of shadowing is a tradition, not a training plan. Here's the Day-4 curriculum that gets a brand-new hire safely behind the front desk.
Ask most GMs how long front-desk onboarding takes and you'll hear "about two weeks." Ask what happens during those two weeks and the answer gets vague: shadowing, mostly. Watching someone else check people in and hoping the important parts stick.
Shadowing isn't training. It's proximity.
What Day-4 readiness actually requires
A new front-desk hire needs exactly four things before a supervised shift:
- Orientation — the property, the brand standards, and the 10/5 Rule (acknowledge guests at 10 feet with eye contact, greet at 5).
- The PMS basics — look up a reservation, check in, check out, post a charge.
- PCI in plain English — what they can and cannot do with a card number, before they ever touch one.
- Someone beside them — a supervised shift with real guests, where mistakes are caught in the moment.
That's roughly 90 minutes of structured lessons plus supervised floor time. Not two weeks.
The curriculum, backwards
The trick is building the path backwards from the shift, not forwards from "everything they should eventually know." Everything else — night audit exposure, upsell technique, group arrivals — comes after they're useful, when it has context to attach to.
What auto-assignment changes
The reason most hotels don't run this playbook isn't that they disagree with it. It's that someone has to remember to assign it, on the hire's first day, every time, through 70% annual turnover.
That's an automation problem, not a diligence problem. When the hire event comes from your HRIS, the role path assigns itself and the new team member gets an SMS magic link before their first shift. Nobody remembers anything — it just happens.
